This week's topic is about our attendance at the NEA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

National Education Association (NEA) - Orlando 2006

The Summer is for relaxing, vacationing and fun, so sit back relax and have fun reading about our first Convention as a Medical Team.

We attended the National Education Association Convention, which took place June 30 through July 6, 2006 in Orlando, Florida. There were so many people to meet, and many more booths to experience at the Convention Center. Everyday held new things in store for our team.

The National Education Association (NEA), the nation's largest professional employee organization, is committed to advancing the cause of public education. NEA's 2.8 million members work at every level of education -from pre-school to university graduate programs. NEA has affiliate organizations in every state and in more than 14,000 communities across the United States.

NEA Expo Poster We received thousands of gasps and expressions directed at BIOFREEZE(tm), and how well it works. We were surprised to see how many knew about it, and much more surprised at how quickly we were selling it. We sold out of our BIOFREEZE Gel on the second day and were running low on all others. The most amazing thing was that there were no treatments given, not because we couldn't legally give them, but because almost "everyone" knew what their problem was. They told us what was wrong, and even how they're treating/fixing it, they just wanted a second opinion or something to kill the pain for the time being. The educators were a lively bunch, discussing various issues including: Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Hammertoes, and Dry/Cracked Heels, to name a few.

This convention reaffirmed to us the types of people that need foot care the most. It turns out that many young people, including athletes don't think they have foot problems because they're so young and people from all ages tend to think feet have to be ugly and/or deformed to need surgery or a podiatrist. We have to spread the word to the young people that we see now, so we won't see them 20 years later in our office trying to get their first foot exam. It's never too late to do the right thing but, why wait when you can catch it early?

Aside from all the excitement at our footDrHorsley.com booth, there were many booths for careers and scholarships and different colleges and universities. Among the booths was Walt Disney World and Universal Studios promoting their "Grad Night" http://www.grad-nights.com/gradnight.htm program which is a special day filled with activities and programs specifically for recent High School graduates. Sea World was there also and brought in live Penguins, and the Twisted Pen factory was creating pens right in front of the public. You can see samples or buy a pen machine and supplies at http://www.twistedpenfactory.com, They made me a blue dog pen, and my sister a red heart pen. It was amazing!

The booth right next to us was a non-profit organization sponsoring schools in Chiapas, Mexico and in Bosnia. There were beautiful pieces of art in poster, plaque, and wall hanging form. There were also various buttons (pins) for sale, some said "Robin Hood was right", "He's not MY president", "Make love not war" and many more. Of course I indulged in a few of those buttons for my "opinionated" mother and, I really wanted the Hanging Sun made in Mexico but couldn't spare a donation over 30 dollars.... -so I stayed with some handmade postcards which were replicas of the authentic posters.

Being the 40th anniversary of the combining of the NEA and The ATA (American Teachers Association), there were many awards given during the NEA Human and Civil Rights Awards Dinner. The Awards dinner was very educational because there were so many awards given to people that some have never heard of, yet do so much for the education of all races and types of students.

The awards were as follows:

  • Applegate-Dorros Peace and International Understanding Award
  • Author-Illustrator Human and Civil Rights Award
  • Carter G. Woodson Memorial Award
  • Cesar Chavez Accion y Compromiso Human and Civil Rights Award
  • Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Award
  • George I. Sanchez Memorial Award
  • H. Councill Trenholm Memorial Award (black)
  • H. Councill Trenholm Memorial Award (non-black)
  • Leo Reano Memorial Award
  • Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Award
  • Mary Hatwood Futrell Award
  • Rosena J. Willis Memorial Award (Local Affiliate)
  • SuAnne Big Crow Memorial Award
  • Virginia Uribe Award for Creative Leadership in Human Rights
These awards were given to nominees whose actions and compassion dealing with every day people helps make the world more understanding of diversity.

The mother of many more of our adventures to come, the NEA EXPO 2006, has truly been a blast and a financial and educational experience. If you missed out this year, register now for next year's NEA EXPO 2007 located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania online @ http://www.nea.org

As always, thanks for stopping by, and I hope to find you here next week for more on the latest Foot 411!
