News Release - APMA and JB Focus on Educating Families About Diabetes

Children at the Heart of "Diabetes is a Family Affair" Campaign

Bethesda, Maryland
This November, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) will launch its annual "Diabetes is a Family Affair" campaign. Sportscaster James Brown, better known as JB, is teaming up with APMA for the third year in a row to help raise awareness of diabetes and its complications. But this year, getting these critical messages through to children is the focus of the campaign.

"I know how important educating families on diabetes is," said James Brown. "I’m committed to helping as many people as possible learn how to prevent diabetes and its many complications."

With a recently released government report stating that one in three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes, it’s more important than ever for families to learn about diabetes.

Executive Director of APMA, Glenn Gastwirth, DPM, explains, "By teaching children about diabetes now, we hope to lower the risk of developing diabetes and its complications, especially amputations." "APMA is dedicated to helping young people learn more about this disease and encouraging them to talk to their families about it at home," said Gastwirth.

The APMA has crafted an innovative and fun way to teach young people about diabetes, how it affects the feet, and how it can be prevented and treated. An animated, interactive movie featuring JB, tip sheets, quizzes and other resources, will help kids understand that diabetes is hereditary but can be prevented by exercising and eating right. The campaign kits will be distributed to schools all across the country and they will also be available on a special kid-friendly section of www.apma.org.
